UNDERPANTS

Whats with pants? Why are they called "pants"? The only thing on them that is bigeminal is the pant legs, but then, why do people not refer to the pant legs as pants? They call them "pant legs". And what about underpants? They dont even have pant legs! WHERE DOES THE "S" COME FROM THERE!?
How in gods name did it become possible for one to say "I have a pair of underpants."!?
